After playing seven innings in an off-and-on rain, the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Salem Red Sox game Sunday afternoon was suspended in the top of the eighth inning with the teams tied 7-7.

Wilmington got to Salem starter Dylan Thompson in the top of the first inning as Brewer Hicklen and Dennicher Carrasco lined RBI doubles to deep center followed by a two-run triple by Nick Pratto . Offerman Collado ended the five-run frame with an RBI single. Salem chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the third when Keith Curcio laced a two-out double to right and was singled home by Pedro Castellanos.

After Castellanos made second base on a wild pitch, Marcus Wilson singled him home to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Sox tied the game in the sixth when Wilson scored after Michael Osinski reached on a fielding error and Nick Sciortino followed with a towering two-run homer to left.

Wilmington regained the lead off Sox reliever Algenis Martinez in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from MJ Melendez and a balk that plated Carrasco. But in the bottom of the frame, back-to-back singles from Curcio and Castellanos put runners on the corners and a wild pitch and a balk from Blue Rocks’ reliever Austin Lambright plated the tying runs.

After Martinez allowed a one-out single to Kyle Kasser in the top of the eighth he asked for time and a tool to clean his muddy cleats . While he did this, the grounds crew came out and spread drying agent on the pitching mound and the batter’s boxes. After the boxes were relined and play was about to be resumed, Wilmington manager Scott Thorman, who had disputed the game-tying balk call an inning prior, came on the field to check the footing on the base paths and apparently convinced the umpires that the game should be suspended.

ON DECK: With Salem and Wilmington already due to play a twi-night doubleheader on Monday at 11:05 a.m. and 6:05 p.m., it was decided that Sunday’s suspended game will resume at 11:05 a.m. and the regularly scheduled first game of the doubleheader will follow approximately 30 minutes afterwards. The 6:05 p.m. game will be made up later in Wilmington on a date that has yet to be determined. Monday’s starters in the second game are slated as Thad Ward (0-0, 1.65) for Salem and Daniel Tillo (4-7, 4.46) for Wilmington.
