Mike Looney of Catawba won the first Late Model race on the Pulaski County track since 2017 by coming from behind to edge reigning NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Philip Morris by .09 seconds on Saturday night.

“I had given up,” Looney said, according to a Motor Mile press release. “We were just too free to run [Morris] down.”

Morris won the pole in qualifying and led throughout the 50-lap race when a caution led to a lap 44 restart, which included Morris and Looney and Brandon Pierce near the front.

When Morris and Pierce started battling for position, Looney go around both of them and hung on to win.

“I knew I was really going to have to get after it,” Morris said. “… [The circumstances] gave Looney a good run, and my hat’s off to him — he did a great job of holding me off.”
