COMING UNDONE: Diosbel Arias laced a bases-loaded triple to key a four-run 10th inning, and the Down East Wood Ducks rallied from a late deficit to defeat the Salem Red Sox 6-2 on Saturday in front of an announced crowd of 1,345 at Haley Toyota Field.

The Sox (36-47 overall, 11-6 second half) dropped two of three to the Wood Ducks (59-27, 9-8), falling for just the second time in six July games.

ZONE BECOMES ELUSIVE: With the Sox holding a 2-1 lead entering the ninth, manager Corey Wimberly summoned hard-throwing Joan Martinez to try to close it out.

The right-hander struggled to find the plate, walking the bases loaded with two outs. Down East’s Yohel Pozo then took a close full-count pitch for ball four, forcing in the tying run.

FROM BAD TO WORSE: Martinez came out to start the 10th inning, too, and Down East went on the attack immediately. The free runner on second, designated by minor league baseball extra-innings rules, was quickly joined by two more as Franklin Rollin singled and Josh Altmann got hit by a pitch.

That set the stage for Arias, who drilled a ball into the right-center gap to plate three runs. A wild pitch brought home Arias to make the score 6-2.

Martinez had entered the game with a 3-1 record and 1.98 ERA for Salem, having walked 10 batters in 27 1/3 innings. His ERA soared to 3.18 after his rocky inning of work.

STRONG EFFORT: The late collapse overshadowed a terrific start by Salem’s Jhonathan Diaz, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

He ultimately allowed one run on one hit over 5 2/3 innings before giving way to Hunter Smith, who pitched 2 1/3 scoreless frames.

LOOSE ENDS: The Sox got their runs on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Nishioka in the second inning and an RBI single by Ryan Fitzgerald in the fifth. … Pedro Castellanos recorded two of Salem’s eight hits. … Arias finished 2 for 4 with a walk and four RBIs for the Wood Ducks. … The Sox dropped to 6-32 in games they’ve scored fewer than three runs.

ON DECK: The Sox open a three-game, two-day home series with Wilmington at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, with RHP Dylan Thompson (2-6, 5.45) slated to pitch for Salem.
