KESTWICK — Virginia Tech rising sophomore Cameron Moore defeated college teammate Mark Lawrence Jr. 1 up on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 106th VSGA State Amateur at Keswick Golf Club.
Moore was one of five players with local ties to win two matches Wednesday and reach the quarters. Former University of Virginia and George Mason University golfer Connor Messick, who was the top qualifier in stroke play, posted 1-up victories over Jack Montague and Teddy Zinsner (19 holes).
Blacksburg’s Christopher Zhang, Radford University’s Peter Gasperini and Virginia Tech’s Connor Burgess also advanced to the quarterfinals.
Roanoke’s Chase Bailey lost to Jordan Utley 2 up in the round of 32. Justin Young of Roanoke was beaten by Lawrence in the round of 32.
RU golfers Ben Ramsey and Kyle Bailey also fell in the round of 32.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Thursday, with the 36 hole championship match scheduled for Friday.
