On June 6, 1944, the United States offered up thousands of its young men on the beaches of Normandy, France, for the purpose of reclaiming and freeing Europe from the clutches of Hitler and the Axis powers. "Operation Overlord" succeeded in doing just that, but at an enormous cost of blood and treasure. The rows upon rows of grave markers at the American cemeteries in Normandy attest to that and they serve as perpetual reminders to all that freedom has never been free.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of that gargantuan, bloody feat, the best we could offer at present was to send Donald J. Trump (with his family in tow); a narcissistic, egocentric, ignorant and greedy draft-evader and would-be autocrat to represent us on such a unique and somber occasion which called for the highest degree of solemnity, reflection and respect for the memory of all those who were killed and wounded - as well as the "fortunate" ones who stormed the beaches relatively unscathed and set about destroying enemy fortifications.
The speech delivered by Trump was well-written, but it lacked impact because...it was delivered by Trump. His show-boating presence there, in my opinion, was a gross sacrilege perpetrated on hallowed ground.
It left me nauseous...
