My family of six recently had the opportunity to travel from Roanoke via Amtrak to New York City to catch an international flight from JFK. We did the same thing in reverse 10 days later. As a party of six, we found this routing via Amtrak less expensive than flying via a connecting flight from Roanoke.

What we witnessed on our trip was the convenience of Amtrak’s still relatively new service from Roanoke. The Roanoke platform is modern and user-friendly. Parking is a breeze in the adjacent garage. Most of all we witnessed Amtrak staff that was caring and efficient. On several occasions conductors assisted passengers with their luggage as the train arrived at stops so the passengers could safely prepare to exit the train. The porters at New York Penn Station are friendly and knowledgeable and willing to stay with passengers until they get their bearings while exiting Penn Station.

Thank you Roanoke regional leaders for making this form of transportation available more directly for our region. Thank you Amtrak staff for the care and compassion you showed your riders. Keep up the good work.
