Sept. 24 was a great day for the annual Blacksburg Battles Cancer golf tournament and auction held at Blacksburg Country Club. For the sixth year, participants, including 33 teams, and supporters of this event continued to ensure that our local community receives assistance in the battle against this devastating disease.
This year’s beneficiaries of the approximately $33,500 raised include:
- The Christina Phipps Foundation, a first-time beneficiary receiving a grant to teach local yoga instructors on the benefits of yoga specific to cancer patients, survivors and family members. Once certified, the yogis will provide complementary classes to our community members.
- Special Love Inc., an organization that provides local children with cancer the opportunity to “just be kids” through special camps and, most important, a community of support that assures these struggling families they’re not alone.
- Students vs. Cancer, an organization that helps local students and teachers in Southwestern Virginia who are battling cancer with unique ways to lessen the stress of this disease through such treats as complimentary movie passes, a dinner out or helping with bills.
- Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge, a local chapter of the national organization, that provides these services in the area including: breast cancer screenings, diagnostics, treatment, patient navigation, education and transportation to women who need this assistance.
Blacksburg Battles Cancer is generously supported by our title sponsor, Carilion Clinic. We also thank our Eagle Sponsors: Michael B. Cooke, CPA, PC; Collision Plus; The Priscilla Morris Team; Tickle Oil & Propane Inc.; Celanese; SAS Builders Inc.; and Jeff Stosser. This event would not be possible without the support of many others: Birdie Sponsors, auction sponsors and donors, prize sponsors and hole sponsors.
In six years, this event has raised more than $165,000. All of us have been touched by cancer and we will not stop this battle until it’s defeated. This is our community and our fight.
