MARTINSVILLE — Democrats have decided not to nominate a man to run against Republican Sen. Bill Stanley in November.

Democrats met in Martinsville Saturday afternoon and voted to run no candidate rather than the only one seeking the nomination.

Fourteen people voted to put no Democratic candidate on the November ballot, while 9 people voted for Sherman Witcher.

“Sherman presented himself well, but he just didn’t seem to be building the organizational structure it would have taken for a campaign,” said Chris Daniel, the chairman of the committee organizing the nomination process.

Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Franklin, is running again to represent the 20th Senate District, which covers Henry and Patrick counties, Galax and Martinsville as well as parts of Danville and Carroll, Franklin, Halifax and Pittsylvania counties.

Witcher has run for elected office before. He ran for state Senate in 2007 as an independent against Republican Robert Hurt, receiving 24% of the vote. Again as an independent candidate, he tried to unseat Del. Charles Poindexter, R-Franklin, in 2009, but lost with 21% of the vote.
