A 17-year-old girl was killed on Smith Mountain Lake on Sunday evening when a boat and a personal watercraft collided.
The teen, of Clemmons, North Carolina, was riding the Polaris watercraft with 19-year-old William Rentz Brandt, of Danville, according to Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries spokesman Lee Walker.
Police did not release the teen’s name Monday because she is a juvenile, according to Walker.
The personal watercraft and a 21-foot Key West boat were both operating in a cove near the Anthony Ford Boat Ramp in Pittsylvania County around 7:45 p.m.
Both vessels were exiting the cove when they collided, according to Walker.
Brandt was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. His condition was unknown Monday evening.
The driver of the boat, Drewry Woodson Hall, 20, of Martinsville, and his passenger, Capers Penn Zentmeyer, 22, of Martinsville, were not injured in the crash. Both got into the water after the wreck to help pull the injured individuals to shore, Walker said.
Investigators have not determined whether or not alcohol was a factor in the wreck, Walker added.
No charges had been filed by Monday evening and the crash is still under investigation.
