Capt. Doug Hurd (left) and Battalion Chief Marci Stone of the Roanoke Fire-EMS walk away from a vacant warehouse that caught fire just off of the Walnut Avenue bridge Saturday afternoon. The call came in at 4:08 p.m. and the fire was handled in approximately 20 minutes.

A fire at a vacant warehouse in Roanoke on Saturday afternoon created smoky skies but resulted in no injuries or structural damage.

When firefighters arrived at the building, just off the Walnut Avenue bridge, they found plastic materials on fire, causing heavy smoke visible from Interstate 581, said Roanoke Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Marci Stone.

Stone said the recyclable goods, which she described as pallets of plastic materials packaged in a shape similar to hay bales, were burned up.

The fire was reported at 4:08 p.m., and Stone said crews had it under control in approximately 20 minutes.

Stone characterized the building as a large, open warehouse enclosed on three sides with a canopy.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
