Update 11:12 a.m.:

All lanes of southbound Interstate 81 have reopened in Rockbridge County.

State police said eight vehicles — three-tractor trailers and five passenger vehicles — were involved in three separate crashes. The agency had earlier reported that 10 vehicles were involved.


Travelers heading south on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County can expect delays from three crashes involving 10 vehicles Friday morning.

State police report being on the scene at mile marker 196, where the first crash occurred about 8:24 a.m. The other two followed in quick succession.

Several people were taken to Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington for treatment of what police described as non-life threatening injuries.

I-81 was blocked at 10:30 a.m., but police said one lane would reopen shortly.

Three of the 10 vehicles were tractor-trailers. None carried hazardous materials.
