Firefighters will resume attacking a forest fire in Buchanan in the morning after about 90 acres were scorched Monday.

About 50 firefighters from Botetourt and Rockbridge counties, as well as crews from the Virginia Department of Forestry, spent several hours on Monday on a mountain near Short Hill Drive battling a wildfire, said Botetourt County Battalion Chief Andrew Moore.

Moore said firefighters arrived around 1:15 p.m. to a 3-acre brush fire that was visible from Lee Highway and Interstate 81.

The steep and rocky terrain hindered firefighters’ efforts. However, they were able to prevent damage to structures by extinguishing surrounding flames.

Moore said crews will begin fighting the fire again Tuesday around 8 a.m.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
