A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after a dog attacked him in Botetourt County, according the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses told deputies that they were at a residence in the 2100 block of Timber Ridge Road in Buchanan for a gathering, and when people went inside to get food, they thought the boy went in with them, Major J. R. Mandeville said in a news release. People heard the boy scream, and when they went outside they saw a dog attacking him.

The boy’s father pulled the dog off the child.

The dog was shot prior to deputies arriving, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities did not identify who shot the dog.

Animal control took the dog to the health department for testing.

The boy was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His condition was unknown Monday.

No charges have been filed at this time.
