Two people were rescued on the James River Thursday after their canoe capsized.

A man and woman lost their food and water when their boat flipped about 11 a.m. in Botetourt County, near the Rockbridge County line, according to Zach Beckner, fire chief of the Troutville Volunteer Fire Department.

The woman injured her back when the couple tried to gain control of the canoe they had rented.

Both made their way to the riverbank, where rescuers brought them by boat to the nearest landing, Beckner said. Botetourt County Fire and EMS and the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department also responded.

The man and woman were passing through on a month-long journey, according to Beckner. Both were wearing life jackets.
