There’s a new Highlander on Radford University’s campus — a statue in front of Russell Hall done by Utah artist Virgil Oertle.

It was commissioned to provide brand awareness for the Highlander mascot and to create new campus traditions: The Highlander stands for strength and courage, according to information from the university.

The statue was unveiled earlier this month with bagpiper, cheerleaders, RU Rockers (dance team), President Brian Hemphill, Athletics Director Robert Lineburg and the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

The university said the Highlander was covered by private funds — and the cost was not released. “As such, it’s not something you can pick up for $10,000,” the artist writes about such sculptures.
