A Salem man faces new criminal charges in an assault last week on a school bus driver.

Police say the assault occurred the day after the bus driver was accused of assaulting a minor. The driver, Johnny P. Couch, has since been fired and charged in that case.

On Wednesday, Shannon D. Aliff was charged with a felony count of malicious wounding, two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and one misdemeanor count of trespassing on a school bus.

“The Salem Commonwealth’s Attorney determined that the original charge of misdemeanor Assault and Battery was not appropriate for the offense,” Salem spokesman Mike Stevens said in an email on Wednesday. “The law does not allow amending a charge from a misdemeanor to a felony, so the original charge was dropped on Tuesday and new charges were filed today.”

Aliff is being held in Roanoke County Jail without bond.
