A Roanoke man has been charged with second-degree murder in the Friday stabbing death of another man.

Just before 7:30 a.m. Friday, police found Jeffery Turney, 40, of Roanoke in the 300 block of Walnut Avenue Southeast, a block just off Jefferson Street occupied almost entirely by the Walnut Avenue Bridge. He had been stabbed but was still alive, according to police.

He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital just a few blocks away, where he died, police said.

Russell Gordon, 51, has been arrested and charged in Turney’s death, police said.

Turney and Gordon knew each other, police said, and the investigation indicates that they had engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated, resulting in Turney’s death.

Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to called 344-8500 or text 274637 with “RoanokePD” at the beginning. You can remain anonymous.
