A former Virginia Tech postdoctoral associate and graduate student government leader was arrested and charged with child pornography possession last month.
Matthew Chan, 34, of Blacksburg is charged with 22 counts of child pornography possession, according to online court records. A plea hearing is scheduled for July 2.
Chan was the Graduate Student Assembly president during the 2015-16 school year. He most recently worked as associate director of Virginia Tech’s Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology in the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science.
He is no longer a Virginia Tech employee, according to a university spokesman.
Released on a $15,000 bond after his arrest, Chan was ordered to have no unsupervised contact with minors before his case is resolved and barred him from accessing the internet other than to use a cell phone to communicate with relatives and his attorney.
