Virginia Tech announced today that freshman guard Shaniya Jones has decided to transfer from the school.
Jones had played in just five games for the 8-0 Hokies. She was averaging 2.6 points and 10.2 minutes.
She has played in only one of the team's past three games. After not playing against Villanova, she played seven minutes against Richmond. She did not play at all against Rutgers last week.
Jones, who is from High Point, North Carolina, helped Wesleyan Christian Academy win a state title last season. She earned all-state honors.
Here is what Tech coach Kenny Brooks had to say after Tech beat Radford on Tuesday night:
“I knew she was unhappy, which is kind of crazy in this day and age,” Brooks said. “I look back on my freshman year [at James Madison], I barely played.
“I knew she wanted to play more. In order for her to play more, she’d have to play better than someone else. And everyone else is playing pretty good.”
