Virginia has a long and storied war history and a large military presence throughout the state. Occasionally, you will come across a historic monument or marker paying tribute to the Civil or Revolutionary wars, and others. With Richmond being the capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, monuments and markers throughout the state depicting Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson are prevalent.
It's not all about the Civil War in Virginia, however, as markers dedicating lost lives throughout the days of the Revolutionary War, World Wars I and II, and the war in Vietnam, are also scattered throughout the state. There's even monuments in Roanoke that go beyond war specifically, with the locally known Mayor's Monument in Elmwood Park.
