Hoopla battle of bands logo

Devils Backbone Brewing Co. and the Roanoke Outside Foundation are teaming up for a free concert and beer festival set for Elmwood Park.

A key component of the Aug. 3 event is a battle of the bands, in which the winner will play the Devils Backbone annual Hoopla festival, Sept. 27-29, at the brewery's basecamp site in Roseland.

Central and Southwest Virginia acts Chupacabras, Morgan Wade, Tony Camm & the FUNK Allstars, and 49 Winchester will compete in the band battle. Concert-goers will vote for their favorite.

A headlining performance is in the works and will be announced later on, according to a news release this morning from Roanoke Outside Foundation.

Games and Hoopla ticket giveaways, local food trucks, vendors, and, or course, Devils Backbone beers (just maybe including a special one-off) are on the agenda, as well.

You have to buy your beers there, and that's OK, too, because proceeds will go back to the community through DB's nascent partnership with Roanoke Outside, which is responsible for Down by Downtown and the Go Outside Festival events in Roanoke.

Btw, the Hoopla has already announced much of its lineup. It includes Caamp, Ripe, Larry Keel Explosion feat. Robert Walter, the same Walter's own 20th Congress, Kat Wright and Aaron Lee Tasjan.
