New York Times best-selling author Catherynne M. Valente will give a reading Wednesday at the Williamson Road Branch Library in Roanoke.

A writer of science fiction, fantasy and young adult fiction, Valente will read from her newest novel, “Space Opera,” a 2019 Hugo Award nominee. The humorous premise involves an intergalactic version of the Eurovision Song Competition, in which the planets of the losing teams get destroyed.

The film rights for “Space Opera” have been optioned by Universal Pictures.

Valente will also be the speaker Thursday at the graduation ceremony at Community High School of Arts and Academics in Roanoke.
