There's been work going on in a former restaurant space in the Salem shopping center just behind the AMC Classic Salem Valley 8 movie theater.
KJ's Grill & Kabab House is in the works at 1776 Apperson Drive.
The restaurant will focus on Pakistani food. Owners KJ and Shaeen Mehmood are both natives of Pakistan who live in the Roanoke Valley and work in real estate. Shaeen said even though she grew up in England, cooking Pakistani food has always been a passion and she and her husband are big foodies who want to share the dishes they love. The restaurant primarily will focus on take-out, Shaeen said, but there will also be a small dining area with 15 to 20 seats.
KJ's Grill menu will include a lot of traditional Pakistani selections, including biriyani, lamb chops, aloo gosht (like a beef or goat stew with potatoes), chapli kabab (similar to a hamburger) and a variety of kababs. It will also offer naan, hummus, fries and a list of vegetarian options. Shaeen Mehmood said the food is similar to Indian cuisine, but meals often contain more meat and use different spices.
Work is happening on the restaurant space right now, and the owners are waiting on a gas line to be put in. KJ's Grill is expected to have a grand opening June 15.
