The Old Blacksburg Middle School - roanoke.com

Town and county remain stalled on the future of the site.

The Montgomery County School Board wisely chose to bow out of the tangled thicket that is the Old Blacksburg Middle School. That leaves the county board of supervisors and Blacksburg Town Council to duke it out over what will become of the property.

Baptists might leave downtown Blacksburg - roanoke.com

Blacksburg Baptist Church has been a fixture at the north end of downtown for more than five decades.

It might be gone before another decade passes if the town maintains the integrity of its historic district. The growing church needs town permission to demolish historic homes they own on Progress Street and to move the public alley that divides the block.

Breast examinations should start before the age of 50 - roanoke.com

Breast examinations should start before the age of 50

As a person who has survived breast cancer, I take personal offense at anyone saying mammograms before 50 and self-examination are unneeded. I just turned 50 this year, but through self-examination I found my cancer when I was 43. The mammogram showed nothing when I had it the previous October 2001, but through self-exam I found the lump in August 2002.

Find the facts, lay them out - roanoke.com

Hamilton's resignation should not be the end of lawmakers' quest to find what happened -- and what they might need to do.

Newport News Republican Phil Hamilton resigned from the House of Delegates, apparently cutting short a state ethics investigation into his financial dealings as one of the legislature's senior budget negotiators.

The ball is in Roanoke's court - roanoke.com

A tennis group wants to use Countryside's indoor courts to teach youth. Can the city afford it?

A request by the Blue Ridge Junior Tennis League, on the surface, sounds reasonable: The group would lease indoor courts at Countryside Golf Course, rent court time to players and use the funds to teach the game to youngsters.

For those who have too little - roanoke.com

The teenagers didn't seem disrespectful -- just oblivious, standing in a cast bronze bread line, posing with statues of gaunt men waiting for food in the depths of America's Great Depression.

Some towered a good head above the figures, products of excellent nutrition all their young lives; one girl draped herself over the top of a statue in a smiling, goofy embrace.
