By the time you read this, you'll know whether the second in a series of similar storm systems delivered abundant rain to Southwest Virginia on Sunday.

Suddenly, it is looking a lot like a typical spring, with low-pressure systems pulling through every few days, bringing good chances of storms and rain each time.

The third in the series is likely to move through the area about Wednesday or Thursday. There are a lot of details still to be determined about the path and strength of that storm, but it should bring another bout of rain to the area.

I probably will be seeing its effects long before most of you. The storm-chasing team of 12 I'm helping lead will attempt to intercept this system Tuesday in the southern Plains, where it might fire yet another round of severe weather.

Saturday was another day of deadly tornadoes, as the same low that affected Virginia on Sunday triggered widespread severe weather in the central United States.

There may be a break ahead for the central U.S. A cool, calm pattern appears likely to settle in for a few days after the midweek storm, a welcome breather for a region that has suffered so much this spring. We'll be traveling more miles and longer hours to find storms during that time.

A period of cool and occasionally damp weather will follow suit for Virginia. That, too, is a needed break -- from many months of drought.
