May is the best month of the year for seeing woodland wildflowers. The days are warm without being hot, and plenty of sunlight still hits the ground because the trees and bushes aren't fully leafed out.

These woodland ephemerals usually appear on rocky slopes with rich, damp but consistently draining soil. The plants listed above are a sampling of some that bloom in our area in May.
