Insanity defense planned for hit-and-run suspect
When Jeffery Young goes on trial in a hit-and-run death, his lawyer plans to argue he was insane.
A lawyer for the man charged in last year's fatal hit-and-run in Roanoke County will argue that the defendant was insane at the time of the incident, according to a court document filed this week.
Jeffery Young's lawyer will use the same defense in Young's trial on a malicious wounding charge in Floyd County.
Young, 31, of Floyd County is charged with first-degree murder and felony hit-and-run in the death of Thomas Farrell. Farrell, 49, was hit and killed Jan. 28, 2008, while on a morning jog in Southwest Roanoke County.
Police were still investigating the hit-and-run two days later when Young was arrested and charged in Floyd County with hitting a woman with a vehicle and then attacking her with a stick outside Slaughters' Supermarket.
Roanoke County investigators discovered that Young was known to have driven a white Jeep Wrangler that they suspected was used in the hit-and-run.
But it wasn't until October, nearly eight months after Farrell's death, that a Roanoke County grand jury indicted Young in the hit-and-run.
That trial is scheduled to begin April 15. Young has waived his right a jury trial, according to a notice that his lawyer, Fred Kellerman, filed this week in Roanoke County Circuit Court.
The Floyd County trial is scheduled to start March 2.
Young also is charged with one count of assault on a law enforcement officer and two counts of obstruction of justice in the Floyd County case.
Court records obtained through the Virginia Freedom of Information Act show that Young has a history of schizophrenia and paranoia.
Kellerman could not be reached Friday afternoon.
