Floyd County man faces additional charges in supermarket assault

Police are also investigating whether Jeffery Young's white Jeep Wrangler was involved in a fatal Roanoke County hit-and-run.

A Floyd County man faces additional charges in an assault at a grocery store.

Jeffery Martin Young was arraigned this morning in Floyd County General District Court on one count each of assault on a law enforcement officer and malicious wounding and two counts of obstruction of justice. In January, he was arrested after a woman was hit with a vehicle and then attacked with a stick outside Slaughters' Supermarket in Floyd. He was charged with malicious wounding at the time; last week, a Floyd County grand jury indicted him on the three additional charges as well.

Roanoke County police also are investigating whether Young's white Jeep Wrangler was involved in a hit-and-run that killed runner Thomas Farrell in Southwest Roanoke County just two days before the incident at Slaughters'.

Police said they received several tips about a white Jeep during their investigation of the hit-and-run. They found a Jeep registered to Young and his mother in a Roanoke towing company's lot. It had been towed from a private parking lot in Southwest Roanoke County near the site of the hit-and-run.

Police searched the Jeep and seized items including a partial palm print, paint chips, a headlight and a swab of a stain on the hood.

Young has not been charged in the Roanoke County hit-and-run.
