The Battle of Blair Mountain

In 1921, thousands of union miners gathered in Marmet, W.Va., near the state capital of Charleston. Armed with rifles, revolvers and machine guns stolen for coal mining companies, they marched on Logan and Mingo counties -- the last two non-union counties in West Virginia. They were met at Blair Mountain, in the edge of Logan County, by a mine company army supported by local and state police and volunteers from around the state. It was the largest armed civil uprising in the United States since the Civil War.
