Bedford
The National D-Day Memorial is located in Bedford because 19 soldiers from the area died on D-Day.
Bedford County
Framed by the Peaks of Otter and Smith Mountain Lake, Bedford is probably most well known for the National D-Day Memorial, which was erected here to honor 19 Bedford soldiers who died on D-Day. It's often said to be the highest per capita loss of any community in the country.
Bedford, founded in 1753 and originally named Liberty, became Bedford City in 1890 and is now simply called Bedford. The county seat is the city of Bedford, which under Virginia's system of local government is a separate entity from Bedford County. The city is also home to the Elks National Home.
