What follows is a partial listing of civic groups active in the Roanoke Valley. Altruist Club: Nonprofit organization that presents annual Debutante Ball. Awards scholarships and book grants to college-bound students. Meets twice a month, September-November; once a month January-May. Barbara Brooks, 362-5101. American Business Women’s Association: Assists women in obtaining educational and business goals and assists students with scholarships.
American Association of University Women, Roanoke Valley Branch: AAUW is a national organization of women with university-level degrees engaged in a wide variety of education-centered community service activities to promote the education and fulfillment of girls and women. Cosmopolitan Club of Roanoke: Group raises funds for area charities and contributes to Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center. Jaycees: Chapters provide opportunities for leadership training and professional development through community service. Open to men and women ages 21 to 39.
The Junior League of Roanoke Valley, Va. Inc.: Organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Kiwanis: Major emphasis is on helping children and senior citizens.
Lions Clubs: Works with sight conservation and eyeglass recycling, youth programs, diabetes research, the Quest drug program and many others. Groups also have hearing conservation projects. 774-2495.
National Association of Women in Construction-Blue Ridge VA #369: An international organization whose core purpose is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry. Open to any woman employed in any capacity in the construction industry. Meets the fourth Thursday of the month at the Clarion Hotel in Roanoke. Roanoke Civil War Round Table: A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization interested in the study of the Civil War and the preservation of Civil War sites.
