Botetourt County is an amateur photographer’s dream. Or at least it is for Kevin Costello, Botetourt County’s tourism coordinator. “I am a bit of a photo buff and I really enjoy driving around many of the back roads of Botetourt County looking for interesting photos to take,” he said. “Botetourt has so many beautiful landscapes that it makes it easy for even an amateur photographer like myself to take nice photos.” If you enjoy taking photos, consider traveling to some of these places while you’re in Botetourt. Not only are they picture perfect, they’re also free. Wine Trail One of Botetourt County’s newest features is the Wine Trail. The county is home to three local vineyards, each with its own special selection and each offering free wine tastings. Blue Ridge Vineyards, the oldest of the three vineyards, had produced grapes for a winery in Amherst County for several years before the owners decided to make their own wine. Its selection includes Riesling, Gerwurztaminer and Sweet Shiloh. Fincastle Vineyard and Winery, the oldest winery, but not the oldest vineyard, uses traditional Bordeaux techniques and produces wine in small batches. Its selection includes Cabarnet Franc, Cabarnet Sauvignon and Hybrid Vigor, a blend of white wines. Virginia Mountain Vineyards, the newest winery, also produced grapes for other wineries for several years. The winery will be celebrating its one-year anniversary in July. Its selection includes Merlot, a rose wine and Holiday Spice, a sweet blend with select spices. Blue Ridge Vineyards is located off U.S. 43 on Shiloh Drive (Virginia 612) in Eagle Rock. Visitors can view the famous Roaring Run Furnace, an iron furnace built in the early 1800s. From there, follow the trail along the Roaring Run branch of Craig Creek to reach a breathtaking waterfall. Be sure to stop along the way to fish, as the water is stocked with trout. There’s also a fishing hole for those willing to brave the cold waters. Guides can also lead visitors on a wildflower walk. And be sure to bring lunch, as there are several picnic areas where visitors can dine beneath the trees. Roaring Run recreational area is owned and cared for by the U.S. Forest Service. It is located off U.S. 220 and Virginia 615 on Roaring Run Road in Eagle Rock. (540) 864-5195. www.fs.fed.us History But Botetourt County isn’t just a nature haven. For the history lovers, the towns of Buchanan and Fincastle have self-guided historic walking tours. Pick up brochures at the Botetourt County Museum and view the exhibits on display. While in Buchanan, stop by pedestrian swinging bridge, one of the sites of Hunter’s Raid, a Union offensive during the Civil War. The original bridge was mostly destroyed, but the stone pilings are still intact; the swing bridge uses the original foundations. Botetourt natives can also research their family history at the Botetourt County Courthouse or the Fincastle Library Genealogy Room. And if you still haven’t satisfied your historic appetite, visit the county’s first genealogy fair, “Start Exploring Your Roots,” on Oct. 13.
