Heidi Miller was scheduled to captain a team in the Virginia Tech Relay for Life cancer fundraising event scheduled for this weekend. She won't be there, but at least she'll be walking again soon.

Miller's family released a statement to the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record thanking the community for its support.

Miller was shot three times in the leg and was recovering after surgery at Montgomery Regional Hospital, said Mary Strickler, her former English teacher at Harrisonburg High School. "She's doing well. She'll be fine."

That's especially important to Miller, Strickler said, because she's an avid tennis player and very active in other school-related extracurricular activities.

"At Harrisonburg High, she was just always doing something at the school," Strickler said.

The 2006 high school graduate is the daughter of Dennis and Lollie Miller of Harrisonburg.

The family's statement reads:

"Heidi Miller and her family appreciate all the love and support they have received following this week's tragic event at Virginia Tech. Heidi recognizes the beauty of growing up in a strong community and realizes what a great resource that is, now more than ever.

"Her condition continues to improve each day.

"Heidi was excited to serve as team captain for the Virginia Tech Relay for Life that had been scheduled for this coming weekend. Due to this crisis, the event has been canceled. Heidi and her family have been overwhelmed by the many expressions of concern, and by those who have asked how they can express their love and support.

"Those wishing to do so may [give] support to the Virginia Tech Relay for Life. Contributions can be made payable to 'Virginia Tech Relay for Life' and sent to the following address: Heidi Miller Relay for Life Team, P.O. Box 1287, Harrisonburg, VA 22803."

During Miller's healing, the family has asked that the community "please respect the family's need for privacy at this time," according to the statement.
