Schedule of events
Key events for Monday, April 16
- Midnight (Sunday into Monday): Lighting of ceremonial candle in front of the April 16 Memorial. The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes.
- 9:43 a.m.: A statewide moment of silence. The Capitol Square Bell Tower bell in Richmond will toll once for each of the victims.
- 11:30 a.m.: Community picnic with food from local vendors on the Drillfield.
- 7:30 p.m.: University commemoration and candlelight vigil in front of the April 16 Memorial. Speakers will include university President Charles Steger and Gov. Bob McDonnell.
- 11:59 p.m.: Extinguishing of the memorial candle. The Corps of Cadets will stand guard for 32 minutes beginning at 11:27. The candle will be extinguished, and the light will be carried back into Burruss Hall, representing the university’s commitment to never forget.
