The Roanoke Times and roanoke.com won an Associated Press Managing Editors' Online Convergence Award for effective presentation of a story in print and the same story online.

The newspaper and Web site were recognized for coverage of the shootings at Virginia Tech, the APME announced Friday.

The online convergence awards recognize print/online combinations that exhibit the best applications of both in presenting a story.

The newspaper and Web site won the same award two years ago for "An Unlikely Refuge," a series about Somali Bantu refugees settling in Roanoke's Terrace Apartments.

Other winners include:

• The Washington Post and washingtonpost.com for a series of poignant and provocative stories on being a black man.
• The Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World and ljworld.com, for looking at the lasting damage mining left on Kansas.

APME also listed finalists and honorable mentions in the online convergence category, including:

• The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ajc.com, for coverage of the fatal crash of a bus carrying Bluffton University’s baseball team.
• The Bakersfield Californian and bakersfield.com, for blogs and other coverage of the murder trial of a man accused of killing his wife, three children and his wife's mother.
• Bristol (Va.) Herald Courier, for a tourism package involving the entire staff that incorporated local history and culture.
• The Post Star and poststar.com, Glens Falls, N.Y., for an investigative follow-up to a highway accident.

APME is an association of editors at 1,500 Associated Press member newspapers in the U.S. and the Canadian Press in Canada. This year's award winners were selected during a meeting of the association’s board of directors that ended Monday in New York. The awards will be presented during the group's annual conference Oct. 3-6 in Washington, D.C. Directors did not participate in discussions or votes on their own newspapers' entries.
