Chateau Morrisette in Floyd has made Hokie Bird wine -- both red and white -- for more than four years. But this Saturday, the winery is working with Virginia Tech's New River Valley Alumni Chapter to boost Hokie spirits even more. The Hokie Bird Wine Festival is a celebration of the 2008 wine labels and a way of supporting the winery's relationship with Virginia Tech, said festival planner Kym Goins. Festivities will include wine tasting, live music, face painting, crafts, artists and a silent auction. Contributions from festival vendors and local businesses are up for bid, and the winners will be announced by Virginia Tech sports commentator Bill Roth. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, Goins said. Meanwhile, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to Virginia Tech's New River Valley Alumni Chapter. Chapter president J.S. Brown said the money will be used for the chapter's scholarship fund, which benefits a student from each of the nine New River Valley public high schools and one home-schooled or private school student. He said the chapter has been helping the winery publicize the event. The Hokie Bird will make an appearance, and so will Bud Foster, Tech's defensive coordinator. Foster will be signing prints designed by Rocky Mount artist Brian Hart. Two Blacksburg bluegrass bands, No Strings Attached and Crossties Bluegrass Band, will play music throughout the event. MaroonHelmet.com will sell Hokie fan fare. Visitors will also be able to sample all of Chateau Morrisette's wines. A bottle of Hokie Bird wine sells for $11.99, and those who purchase a case get a free ticket to the festival. |
