Breaking News: Tech to start text alerts

Virginia Tech will debut a text-message alert system July 2.

The system, which will allow students, faculty and staff to be alerted to emergencies by messages sent to their cellphones, will be provided by 3N National Notification Network, a California mass communications company.

Employees and students at Tech can sign up for the program starting July 2 and it will be fully operational by Aug. 20. In addition to cellphones, subscribers can also choose to be alerted via e-mail or instant messaging. Tech began looking into text message alerts after escaped prisoner William Morva caused the campus to shut down on the first day of classes last August.

The university was in the process of selecting a vendor on April 16 when campus shootings resulted in the deaths of 33 students and faculty.
