Va. Tech board to hear myriad recommendations

Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors will meet Sunday to hear how the university plans to handle the hundreds of recommendations it received in response to the April 16 shootings.

Reports on the shootings filled with suggested changes have been published by the state inspector general's office, three university working groups and panels convened by Gov. Tim Kaine and President Bush.

Tech has already implemented some of the suggestions, but many of them would involve changes in university policy or capital expenditures that would need to be voted on by the board.

The board will not vote on the process for evaluating the recommendations, which will be presented Sunday by Tech President Charles Steger.

Sunday's meeting, to begin at 1 p.m. in Torgersen Hall, is a special meeting of the board and was announced by the university Monday.

The board is also expected to review and approve the state-mandated six-year finance, enrollment and academic plans for 2008 to 2014. The plans are part of the higher education restructuring act and are due to the state Oct. 1.
