Virginia Tech panel to release report on shootings after final private meeting

RICHMOND -- The state panel investigating the Virginia Tech shootings will release its report Aug. 24, according to Gov. Tim Kaine's office.

The panel will deliver the report to Kaine at 11 a.m. in the East Reading Room of the Patrick Henry Building in Richmond.

Kaine appointed the panel within days of the April 16 shootings at Tech and asked its eight members to investigate all aspects of the deadly rampage.

The panel has held four public meetings around the state, conducted scores of private interviews and compiled thousands of pages of documents in an effort to answer questions about the shootings and make recommendations to Kaine.

The panel will meet privately Monday at the University of Virginia to do a final review of its report and to discuss information protected by privacy laws.

Kaine had hoped to receive the report before colleges start fall classes, but he said he also wanted the panel's report to be thorough and accurate. Classes resume at Tech on Monday.

Retired state police superintendent Gerald Massengill is the panel's chairman. Other members include former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge and retired Roanoke County Circuit Judge Diane Strickland.
