Campus security program planned
Officials from public and private colleges have been invited to the Aug. 13 session in Richmond.
RICHMOND -- Administrators, police and other officials from Virginia colleges will have a chance to trade ideas and information about campus security next month during a conference hosted by Gov. Tim Kaine.
Campus security issues have gained greater public attention since the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech. Kaine said the Aug. 13 conference at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond will allow campus officials "to share important information and review the latest technologies that can be deployed to promote campus security."
The conference will include panel discussions on emergency alert systems, preparedness training, campus and community coordination, safety and security coordination, and crime prevention strategies.
Vendors also have been invited to the conference to showcase the latest security-related products and services.
Kaine will deliver opening remarks at the conference. Representatives of all public and private colleges in the state have been invited to the daylong program.
Kaine has appointed an eight-member panel to investigate all aspects of the Tech shootings and said he hopes to receive preliminary recommendations from the group before fall semester classes begin in late August.
