One of two remaining patients at Montgomery Regional Hospital was released Monday about 11:40 a.m., the hospital announced. The patient's name was not immediately available. Kevin Sterne remains in Montgomery Regional in stable condition. Sterne, 22, is scheduled to graduate next month with degrees in electrical engineering and media communications. A photograph showing four law enforcement officers carrying Sterne from Norris Hall, the scene of most of the shooting, appeared on the front page of The Roanoke Times and was shown by other media around the world. Shot twice in the right leg, Sterne, of Eighty Four, Pa., fashioned a tourniquet from an electrical cord before emergency medical teams arrived. Dr. David Stoekle, who later operated on Sterne, said the Eagle Scout's training and quick thinking likely saved his life. Of the hospitals in the region, Montgomery Regional treated the largest number of wounded, 17. "Everybody's doing well and we're very happy about that," said Scott Hill, the hospital's chief executive officer. "As you can imagine, the patients are dealing with a lot of things in their recovery," Hill said. "They're not going to be beaten in this, I can tell you that much." The other Tech student still hospitalized in the region is Sean McQuade, a 21-year-old mathematics major from Mullica Hill, N.J. He was listed in serious condition Monday at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. According to what a relative told The Associated Press, McQuade was shot five times. Roanoke Memorial is the region's level one trauma center, so the most serious cases were sent there. Another patient who was initially treated at Roanoke Memorial has been transferred to another location. That patient's name and the hospital now involved are not being disclosed at the request of the patient's family. A handful of patients taken to a third area hospital, New River Valley Medical Center in Radford, have been released. |
