Corner Shot: Help Tech custodian recover

Virginia Tech custodian Gene Cole escaped harm April 16 when he ran for safety as Seung-Hui Cho pointed a gun at him in Norris Hall.

But Cole, a 53-year-old man with 21 years of university service, couldn't escape heart disease.

A month after the tragedy at Tech, Cole had triple bypass surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He came through the May 16 surgery and was released from the hospital Monday.

His sister-in-law, Patricia "Suzie" Cole, said Cole is anxious to return to work but will need some time to recuperate. Doctors at Duke diagnosed him with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

"Oh, yeah, he'll go back to work," Patricia Cole predicted. "He loves that place."

She said Cole, who lives alone, could use some cheering and urged people to send cards for her brother-in-law.

Those cards may be sent to Patricia Cole at 1240 Forest St., Christiansburg, Va. 24073.
