On the edge

Thoughts on...

Somebody in the United States gets sexually assaulted every two minutes, meaning during your next 30-minute lunch block, fifteen people will have been sexually assaulted.

With homecoming and Halloween festivities taking up time in October, many people fail to recognize that October is also Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month. One in four girls has been sexually assaulted by the time they are 18, and one in five to six boys has been sexually assaulted by the time they are 18, according to the Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley. Another scary statistic about sexual assault is that 73 percent of assaults are by acquaintances.

You can show your awareness by wearing or displaying a teal-and-purple ribbon. To learn more, visit wrcnrv.org.
