Laws teens should know

It seems more and more teenage liberties are being taken away every day, though most of them are taken away for our own good.

Here are some laws that went into effect on July 1 that could affect teenagers.

Texting while driving

Texting while driving is a serious issue. Not only do teens participate in this risky behavior, but yes, adults do it, too. Texting while driving is considered a secondary offense, meaning it is only a punishable offense when the driver has been pulled over for another reason. But do you really want to risk it? Police officers could probably think of another reason to pull you over if they see you texting. The fine for texting while driving can range from $20-$50.

School attendance

Virginia is taking aim at the high school dropout rate. Any student under the age of 18 who has nine consecutive unexcused absences will have their driver's license temporarily suspended.

Mopeds

Last but not least, do you drive a moped or know someone who does? Remember that there is now a restriction on driving mopeds on the highway. Anyone violating this prohibition will be fined $50.

Virginia is cracking down on driving and teen safety. Students should be extra careful to follow the new laws, before and after they turn 18.
