Ice cream in the Valley
Summer is just 18 days away, so keep this guide to ice cream parlors handy. We tried to stick with parlors that are unique to our area, and we hope they will help keep your summer cool.
Pop's Ice Cream and Soda Bar: This retro restaurant offers not only ice cream sodas, milkshakes, malts, sundaes, splits and simple ice cream scoops, but also variants of grilled cheese for anyone who is seriously hungry. Prices for ice cream are moderate (about $2). The ice cream is from Homestead Creamery. Interesting flavors: strawberry cheesecake and mint Oreo.
Katie's Ice Cream and Chocolates: This is an excellent parlor for basic flavors, like chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, birthday cake, and sherbet. Prices are moderate (about $3). Katie's offers not only ice cream but also candy store treats and a huge collection of Beanie Babies.
Salem Ice Cream Parlor: This family-friendly place has great flavors, many types of cones and indoor and outdoor dining.
Ben and Jerry's: Yes, it's chain ice cream; however, that didn't stop us from going. A little more expensive and leaning toward chocolate and caramel flavors, Ben and Jerry's offers milkshakes, smoothies, sundaes, cakes, and, of course, ice cream. Prices are on the higher side (about $5). Interesting flavors: chocolate fudge brownie ice cream and coffee coffee buzz buzz buzz ice cream. Other interesting chain parlors are Bruster's, Cornerstone and Maggie Moo's.
