It's never too early to plan for summer
Many summer camps in Virginia are already taking applications, and some require early registration.
It’s winter. There is snow on the ground and everyone is making snowmen. This is the perfect time to think about summer camps, right? If you are planning to get into a few of these, it is. Many summer camps fill up quickly, requiring registration in the winter to guarantee a spot. Here are some Roanoke Valley overnight summer camps to consider:
The Phoebe Needles Center
Tucked away in Callaway, this may technically be a tiny summer camp operated by the Episcopal Church, but many people who are not members attend. Camps include rock climbing and outdoor expedition. Also, experience helping others through building in Outreach Camp. Not many people attend each session, allowing opportunities to develop strong relationships. The counselors come from as near as Ferrum or as far away as Sweden. You can apply for these camps anytime.
Camp Alta Mons
Camp Alta Mons is a United Methodist Church camp. Although about 150 campers can attend just one of their six-week sessions, everyone is divided into smaller units of 12 to 14 people. Two counselors stay with each unit. You may just stay on the Shawsville camp’s property, but there is a lot to do in the 850 acres. Apply for these camps before summer.
Young Company Theatre Camp
This is only for those who are serious about Shakespeare. In an intense three weeks, you will work on and perform an hour-long version of a Shakespeare play, listen to lectures about Shakespeare’s world, attend multiple plays at the Blackfriars Playhouse
(which is also where you perform your play on the last day), explore Staunton, sing, dance, do acrobatics and have many other opportunities for fun.
Everyone stays at Stuart Hall in Staunton. The counselors and play directors can answer nearly any question concerning Shakespeare. You need to apply by March.
Camp Bethel
Activities at the Church of the Brethren (once again, technically speaking) summer camp range from basic high school one-week camps to rock climbing, biking and even canoeing on the James River.
This camp is in Fincastle, and you can apply for it any time before summer.
