Life of a millionaire

ORLANDO, Fla. — J.J. Redick joked last Saturday that his luck couldn’t get any worse.

But, his unhappiness over his lack of playing time and his recent injuries aside, life isn’t too bad for the Orlando Magic rookie.

"It’s cool to have a little bit of money in your pocket," he said. "As a college senior, I probably had $17 in my bank account, so it’s nice."

He has a guaranteed contract for two years, worth a reported $1.5 million this year. He also has outside income thanks to a Nike deal; a few shooting videos he will be appearing in soon; and trading cards and other memorabilia.

Redick, 22, bought himself a BMW. He also has a Cadillac that he got for free thanks to a "little bit of a deal." He has also bought presents for each member of his family, including an SUV for his father, who had driven the same truck for more than 10 years.

He bought a four-bedroom house in a gated community in suburban Orlando; his older sisters, Alyssa and Catie, came down to help him decorate it. He said he doesn’t usually go into the city unless it’s for practice or games.

Redick recently had a home theater installed in his house, with stadium seating, a big screen in the wall and a high-definition projector.

"It’s pretty sick," he said. "It’s like an actual movie theater."

It’s the perfect place for him to indulge in his passion for video games.

"Playing ‘Halo’ on that screen is pretty sick," he said. "I’ve got all the new games for [Xbox] 360."

Redick wasn’t with his family for Thanksgiving, but they will be visiting him at Christmas. His parents and younger sister, Abby, came down for the team’s first two games. His brother, David, a Marshall football player, visited him last month.

Redick shares his house with his best friend, Ian Carey, a college buddy who is in charge of his appearances.

"I can’t imagine making this transition not knowing anybody down here, so for him to come with me, he’s a great friend," Redick said.

After a period where he spent "every other night" at Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Redick has hired a chef who cooks a number of meals that he and Carey freeze and then heat up during the week.

He’s not a big jewelry guy, but he has bought some custom-made suits.

Redick has a prominent, Los Angeles-based agent, Arn Tellem, and a Tidewater-based financial adviser.

And then there is his life with the Magic. He sits in a leather chair in front of his locker at the TD Waterhouse Centre. The team takes a private charter on road trips, and he orders room service at first-rate hotels.

"I really don’t have a lot of negative things in my life," he said. "Certainly not playing is frustrating, but in the big picture, I’m doing fine."
