Hokies' 'O' again impresses

For the second straight time, a Virginia Tech scrimmage is not just about the team's defense.

BLACKSBURG -- Spring football at Virginia Tech is normally all about defense.

Not this time.

Proving that its success in Tuesday's first scrimmage wasn't some kind of lucky, one-shot deal, Tech's first-team offense continued to shine in Saturday's second scrimmage, producing three touchdowns in a pair of 10-minute quarters at Lane Stadium.

"I'm tired of reading about the offense, man," groaned Vince Hall, Tech's first-team All-ACC linebacker.

"They can help us out against the other team, but not against us. I'd rather see that against the [East Carolina] Pirates, against LSU, and all them besides us," added a grinning Hall, referring to Tech's first two opponents this fall.

Cementing his status as Tech's No. 1 quarterback, junior Sean Glennon completed 8 of 14 passes for 160 yards and three TDs, including an 85-yard catch-and-run hookup with senior wideout Justin Harper. Sophomore Ike Whitaker, who entered the day in a dead heat with junior Cory Holt for the No. 2 QB job, was 8-of-17 passing for one TD.

Junior tailback Branden Ore, who sat out Tuesday's scrimmage with a foot injury, showed he hasn't missed a beat, carrying three times for 57 yards, including a nifty 48-yard TD run in which he reversed to the back side of the original play call.

While it must be noted that all three of the No. 1 offense's TDs came against the No. 2 defense, Ore said there's a lot of reason for optimism for a unit that ranked 99th in the nation last season in total offense.

"We're coming along well, man," Ore said. "The offensive line is doing a great job for us, and as long as they get better for us, the better we'll be. Everything starts with those guys.

"This just gets on the right track going into summertime, just knowing we've got something positive to work with. So everybody is going to have a great outlook on the situation and play better.

"We're trying to give those guys [on defense] a break, man. We're trying to produce just like they produce and we're trying to help them out as much as possible. I think we definitely owe them a break."

Tech's first-team defense gave up one TD to the No. 2 offense. Whitaker was 6-for-8 passing for 46 yards in the 15-play drive, which was punctuated by his 13-yard scoring pass to Josh Morgan.

When asked if the Hokie Nation should be concerned about a defense that lost only three starters off the unit that has led the nation in yards allowed the past two seasons, Hall shook his head his back and forth.

"Naw, I mean we're always going to be there," said Hall, whose 128 tackles led the ACC last season. "We've got the critics everywhere, but it's going to be all right."

When asked to identify the critics and the things they're saying, Hall grinned and pointed the finger at coordinator Bud Foster.

"I don't know," Hall said, laughing. "Whatever Coach Foster says ... he'll be like, 'They're saying this, they're saying that.' So those are the critics. The things? I don't know who the things are."

Harper, who caught four passes for 108 yards, said the offense has something to prove this season.

"This year is going to be a big year offensively and defensively," Harper said. "We're going to put this whole thing together and we're going to try to see all on that ship this year.

"We, the offense, want to be up there with the defense. And for us to be a good team, the defense, offense and special teams have to be good. Once we bring this offense along, we're going to be really a scary football team."

Offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said he's encouraged by his unit's progress thus far. After all, he's been around for springs in which the defense has stoned the offense.

"Yeah, that's happened ... every now and then," said Stinespring, laughing. "Every now and then we've come out here and the chains have not moved ... except backwards."

Tech tidbits

Sophomore tight end Sam Wheeler of Blacksburg had two catches for 33 yards, including a 19-yard TD pass from Glennon. ... Holt attempted just five passes, completing three for 7 yards. ... Converted tailback Jahre Cheeseman carried nine times for 18 yards. Junior walk-on Dustin Pickle of Salem had 17 yards on five carries. Sophomore Elan Lewis, whose stock has been sliding, ripped off an 18-yard run.
