Dr. Marc Siegel won't be on the sideline when the Virginia Tech football team plays North Carolina tonight.
Siegel, who has been an orthopedic team physician for the Tech athletic department for 22 years, has been indefinitely suspended by the athletic department because of his recent arrest.
Assistant athletic director Mike Goforth said Siegel was suspended two weeks ago and did not accompany the Hokies to their most recent game, an Oct. 17 loss at Georgia Tech.
Siegel was charged by Blacksburg police on Oct. 14 with one count of felony property damage. According to court documents, he is charged with damaging a vehicle belonging to Dr. Jim Lebolt, who is in his third year as an orthopedic surgeon for Tech athletics.
Goforth said athletic director Jim Weaver decided on the suspension after consulting with Tech President Charles Steger's office.
"It was a ... cross-campus decision based on policies that are already in place," Goforth said Wednesday. "There's policies on campus ... dealing with harassment and intimidation and that type of thing, and everybody felt it fell within those parameters."
Goforth said he is not sure if Siegel will ever return to his position.
Siegel, who had an unpaid position, was on hand at all Tech football games and many football practices.
He has performed knee operations on football coach Frank Beamer and current and former football players such as Darren Evans, Vince Hall, Lee Suggs and Al Clark. He also has worked with other Tech teams.
"It's unfortunate. He's a good man and is a great surgeon," Goforth said. "He's helped a lot of players. ... It's very uncharacteristic, and I'm deeply saddened by the situation."
