It's fun being a University of Miami receiver these days.

After knocking off two ranked foes, the Hurricanes have skyrocketed to No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Quarterback Jacory Harris has been generating national buzz.

And Miami ranks eighth nationally with an average of 328 yards through the air.

"Everything's going pretty well with us," said receiver Travis Benjamin, whose team visits Virginia Tech on Saturday. "Everything's exciting around campus. Everywhere you go, people are recognizing you and congratulate you."

Harris has a plethora of targets, and he has been doing his best to make them all happy.

Benjamin has a team-high seven catches off the bench. Five other players each have five catches -- receivers Leonard Hankerson and LaRon Byrd, tight end Dedrick Epps and halfbacks Graig Cooper and Javarris James.

"Jacory, he's throwing it to the receivers, he's throwing it to the tight ends, he's throwing it to the running backs, and we're all making plays," Hankerson said. "We have so many athletes. You can't just key on one guy."

Last fall, the 7-6 Hurricanes ranked just sixth in the ACC in both total offense and rushing offense, and were seventh in passing offense. So third-year coach Randy Shannon brought in a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this season, former Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers assistant Mark Whipple.

The offense is "way better" this year, said Benjamin.

"Ever since Mark Whipple came, the offense has been clicking -- deep balls, short balls," Benjamin said. "Everybody's running routes that you know that you can beat the defense [with], no matter what coverage."

Harris' five touchdown passes have been thrown to five different players, including one to backup tight end and former UM basketball player Jimmy Graham.

"That's all Coach Whipple's offense [is] based on -- whoever you have on the field, there's a chance at a ball coming to you, because you're going to be open," Benjamin said.

The 6-foot-8 Graham, a graduate student who blocked 104 shots in his UM basketball career, isn't Harris' only tall target. Byrd and Epps are 6-4, while Hankerson and backup receiver Aldarius Johnson (three catches) are 6-3.

On a "jump ball, they're going to come down with it because they're so big and physical when the ball's in the air," said Benjamin, a 5-10 native of Belle Glade, Fla.

Benjamin caught four passes for 128 yards and one TD in the season-opening 38-34 win at Florida State. Byrd shined in last week's 33-17 win over Georgia Tech, with five catches for 83 yards and one TD.

"The first game was my game. The second game was Byrd's. Who knows who's next when we come up against Virginia Tech?" Benjamin said.

Hankerson is a junior. Benjamin, Byrd and Johnson are sophomores.

"Last year we [were] all young, and you couldn't give them too much" to learn, UM coach Randy Shannon said of the wideouts. "This year, they got a little bit older, a little bit more mature.

"I'm excited with the way they're progressing."

Harris, a sophomore, ranks third nationally in passing efficiency. He has completed 41 of 59 passes for 656 yards and five TDs with two interceptions.

"He's always confident and calm," said Benjamin, who leads the team with 157 receiving yards.

Miami's first four foes seemed so daunting that it would not have been a shock if the Hurricanes had started off 0-4.

But now a 4-0 start would not be a surprise, especially if quarterback Sam Bradford isn't back for Miami's home game with Oklahoma next week.

After going 19-19 the previous three years, the program that boasts five national titles is relevant once again.

But Hankerson and Benjamin aren't doing any bragging.

"We haven't done anything yet," Hankerson said. "We've got to win a couple championships around here before we can say the U is back."
